Top 10 Video Games of All Time

Video Games have progressed over the years from as simple as Pong to being as complicated as the Grand Theft Auto games. Whatever your fancy no one can deny the love that we as a society of consumers love to waste hours of our time playing video games. These are the top 10 greatest video games ever created. We took into account the time period they were made, the technology they used, and the “fun factor” that each game possessed and came up with quite a strong list.

  1. Super Mario Brothers (NES): This is the first game to really change the map when it came to video games. Since its release date in 1985 Super Mario Brothers has been known as the best video game made. Now it has been overshadowed by graphics and new story titles but when it came to originality and creating a completely different world Nintendo did a damned good job here. There is some speculation about “Cheats” for the game but they were probably just bugs in the early systems game that weren’t easy to work out. Nonetheless this game still sells in used video game stores daily and gets simulated on basically any type of system that can actually house a game. Even the TI-83+ calculator has a version of the game out and you can download all 64 levels of the game from their site. Hats off to Nintendo for paving the way for what video games have become today.
  2. Legend of Zelda Ocarina of Time (N64): Yet another game from the Nintendo company. This game came on their 3rd generation system that revolutionized the world with the idea of 3D graphics. Zelda was started on the NES system with The Legend of Zelda which is now a gameboy advance game. The Ocarina of time was the first RPG game for the N64 that really took off. The world created in the game was so unique the characters so fun and so real looking at the time it was tough not to get lost in hours of game playing. This game also brought the idea of beating a level to an entirely new level by ending each world with a certain type of boss. These Bosses took the idea of beating a boss to a whole new level at the same time. This game gets our number two spot for creating a game that will likely be remembered forever.
  3. Final Fantasy 3: The Final Fantasy Series is perhaps the greatest RPG game ever invented. Even the first edition in released in 1987 was way ahead of its time. It was the game that really made RPG games fun to play. It created a whole new world for its players and took the idea of role playing to a new place with its ability to grasp you as a player and make you think you were actually in the world you were playing. Final Fantasy 3 also another Nintendo game was originally released in 1992 on the Nintendo Family Computer and revolutionized the video gaming world. This games popularity is making a comeback with Nintendo releasing a version of Final Fantasy 3 for its newest hand-held system the Nintendo DS in November of 2006. Our hats of to you Square Enix for creating this great series and great game.
  4. Metal Gear Solid (PSone): This is the first of the Sony Playstation games that made our list and it certainly deserves to be the first. Metal Gear Solid released on the PSone by Konami in 1998. Since then the Series has let out 3 new games and has a 4th one releasing for the PS3. Metal Gear Solid uses more strategy than any other shooter game than before but it also brought a more realistic approach to the shooter/action genre. This game gets our number 4 spot for overall gameplay and difficulty. The next game in the series is set to release on June 12th of this year. So get ready all you fans out there Metal Gear Solid IV is said to totally live up to the hype.
  5. Halo 3 (Xbox 360): The number 5 spot on the list brings an old company with a new territory into play. Xbox 360 is the second generation of the Microsoft Brand’s gaming system and upon its release it did not dissappoint. Halo 3 was perhaps one of the most anticipated games ever prior to its release. This game does have a story line but really made a name for itself with its multiplayer capabilities. On the Xbox people could connect via the internet and also through closed circuit connections to have giant Halo battles that could keep anyone entertained for hours upon hours. Halo gets the number 5 spot for being a unique game that came out with a whole new storyline and sold it to people in a way that few new titles can. Halo since its original release has even had a feature film created after it. Congrats Bill Gates on another market well dominated.
  6. Goldeneye 007 (N64): Number 6 was a toss up between a couple of games but when it came down to it we chose to go with yet another Nintendo Title. Goldeneye 007 for Nintendo 64 was based off the James Bond Movie Golden eye and was released in 1997. This game comes in the Top 10 for us because of how similar to the movie it came while still being able to add in the fun first person shooter gameplay that everyone was looking for. It was the first of its kind to be released in 3D on the N64 and upon its release had to be reserved for sometimes months ahead of time. It had everything, the explosions, the storyline, the graphics, and the guns, virtually everything that a adolescent child could’ve asked for. Nintendo delivered BIG here and for that we delivered them the number 6 spot on our list.
  7. Grand Theft Auto IV: GTA IV was purhaps the most anticipated game of all time. It topped 500 million dollars in its first week, but that wasn’t one of the criteria for making this list. The GTA series started on the Playstation One and really made a name for itself with GTA III on the PS2. From there they made 2 other PS2 games and waited for an entire year after the release of the latest generation of Playstation systems to release their next game. The gameplay is about the same as the previous 3 but the graphics and the overall abilities of the game put GTA IV on the top ten of all time list. In the new game along with the Mob Boss type missions and vigilantism you also have the opportunity to actually create personal relationships with the characters in the game and even write your own sort of story line. That ability plus all of the cool features of the GTA series make this game our number 6 game of all time.
  8. Madden Football: This series of games started out as just John Madden Football in 1988 on the computer. The game progressed over the years with its graphics and gameplay abilities to the game that it has become. ESPN has started a series on TV about the game called “Madden Nation” it was all about players of the game who played each other to stay on a tour bus until the grand champion won the tournament. This game morphed from a fun game to play to a near epidemic in 2006 when Madden 2006 sold 2.8 Million copies in just the first month. They have added new abilities to the game and new factors such as the home team advantage and QB Vision which enables you to have more control within the limitations of a specific QB. This games overall gameplay and its ability to advance the sports genre altogether landed The Madden Football series in our Top 10 List.
  9. Sonic The Hedgehog: This game made the top 10 for us based on its fun gameplay and its old school appeal. Sonic started on one of the earliest systems to really catch on and make some waves in the personal videogaming systems Sega Genesis. In 1991 Sega created a brand new character in the videogaming world that would not be forgotten. Sonic the hedgehog has stuck around and remained a fun and easy game to play for people of all ages. The Sega company has since stopped creating new gaming systems but still continues to release their Sonic Series of games and even released its latest game on the Playstation 3 and Xbox 360 in November of 2006. To date the series has sold more than 45 million copies of all of its games and even had its own television series. There isn’t a person out there who hasn’t heard of Sonic and there aren’t many who haven’t played the game.
  10. Contra(NES): Contra. What a great game. Rounding up the top ten this NES game is probably not on most of your top ten video games of all times. This one is somewhat near and dear to my heart because of how I used to watch my brothers play it and let me pretend I was playing. Nonetheless this game which started out as an arcade game in the 1980’s made the move to home entertainment systems on the Nintendo Entertainment System. Its fast gameplay and fun weapons made this game an easy fit to the last spot on our top ten list.
